It's that exciting time of the year again – we're eagerly anticipating the arrival of Ubuntu's next non-LTS release. With the catchy codename 'Mantic Minotaur,' Ubuntu 23.10 comes packed with a remarkable array of fresh features and enhancements.

Mark your calendars for the big day – Ubuntu 23.10 is set to launch on October 12, 2023.

So, without any further ado, let's dive in!

Flutter-based App Store

Ubuntu 23.10 is introducing a brand-new app store built using Flutter. This revamped store boasts a sleek layout, enhanced search capabilities, improved app views, and even lets you switch between Snap and Debian packages.

While it won't replace the classic Software Center, it's a step forward in the evolution of Ubuntu's software stores.

Exciting PPA Changes

Hold onto your hats, because Ubuntu 23.10 is shaking things up when it comes to Personal Package Archives (PPAs).

PPAs will now be managed using deb822-formatted .sources files. Here's the cool part: the GPG keys are directly integrated into the same file. This upgrade ditches the old .list file method and amps up security in a big way.

Linux Kernel 6.5: A Big Change

Hold onto your seats, because a major transformation is coming – Ubuntu is adopting Linux Kernel 6.5. This update is set to bring a bunch of important enhancements, including:

  • MIDI 2.0 support.
  • Better support for Rust programming language.
  • Bringing ACPI to the RISC-V architecture.
  • Exciting improvements for the Loongarch architecture.
  • Embracing Intel's "Topology Aware Register and PM Capsule Interface," which means improved power management features.
  • And much more.

GNOME 45: The Exciting Update

Get ready for some excitement! 😀 As of now, the daily build of Ubuntu 23.10 doesn't include GNOME 45, so we can't show it in action just yet. But stay tuned – it's going to be awesome!

  • A cool new webcam app.
  • An image viewer that's sure to be handy.
  • And, there's a good chance the terminal app will make a comeback.

Not long ago, I took a closer look at its newly redesigned display options and the tweaks made to Fractional Scaling. Gotta admit, I was pretty impressed with what I saw:

Ubuntu Tiling Assistant

Last but not least, Ubuntu 23.10 brings a seriously improved window-tiling system, all thanks to the integration of the well-loved "Tiling Assistant" GNOME extension.

This fresh system gives you more control than ever when it comes to arranging your windows – you can resize them however you like.

Other Changes to Note -

But wait, there's more! Here are some other changes to watch out for in Ubuntu 23.10:

  • Say hello to GCC 13.
  • Get ready for LLVM 17.
  • Embrace the power of Go 1.20.
  • You'll notice Noto Fonts taking the place of DejaVu as the default font in some cases.
  • Get excited for Shotwell 0.32, the first significant update in a while.

Don't forget – Ubuntu 23.10 is set to make its debut later this October. We'll keep a close watch on the daily builds to keep you updated on all the exciting additions you can expect!
